The 2012 Chicago G8 Summit will be held in Chicago, Illinois, between the 15th and the 22nd of May this year. The G8 Summit brings together the heads of the 8 richest industrialized countries. These are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the UK, and the U.S. There have been changes at the top of the ‘richest countries in the world’ list in the past few years and consequently, Brazil, China, India, Mexico, and South Africa are also invited. Also invited at the 2012 Chicago G8 Summit are the heads of the European Union, the African Union, CIS, IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), the UN, UNESCO, World Bank, WHO (World Health Organization), and WTO (World Trade Organization). The meeting coincides with NATO’s summit, which takes place between the 20th and the 21st of May.
Given the fact that the 2012 Chicago G8 Summit and the NATO summit will be held at the same time and in the same city, there is bound to be positive and negative attention. The fact that past G8 summits have seen some confrontation is indicative that confrontation is likely this year. Rahm Emanuel, the city’s mayor, has put restrictions on all public activities during the NATO and 2012 Chicago G8 Summit, including morning gatherings and amplified sound. He has also put restrictions on parades. It therefore follows that confrontation is imminent since protestors are not backing down.
The UNAC (United National Antiwar Committee) as well as an alliance of several Chicago area peace and justice organizations have vowed to protest during the NATO and 2012 Chicago G8 Summit. These organizations include the U.S. Palestinian Community Network, Chicago, the Committee Against Political Repression, Chicago Teachers Union, Campaign to End the Death Penalty, Iraq Veterans Against the War, Global Reach, Inc., Committee to Stop FBI Repression, Chicago Anti-Eviction Campaign, and Episcopalian Peace Fellowship.
According to Frank Benedetto of the Chicago U.S. Secret Service office, there will be no interruptions in the schedules of people working near the conferences. Given the fact that businesses will be open, it follows that establishments could be caught in any possible riot at the 2012 Chicago G8 Summit. These riots often lead to glass breakage, looting, and vandalism. 3M Safety and Security Window Blast Films will help you prevent entry and it will protect the occupants of your building against flying glass.
