When John Pitcairn left America for Europe on a 1915 business trip, he wasn't sure he'd return.
With Europe in flames from World War I, the Pittsburgh Plate Glass owner journeyed across the U-boat-infested Atlantic Ocean to England, took another boat to the Continent, then made his way behind battle lines to his firm's plant in German-occupied Brussels.
Despite the danger, Pitcairn was set on hand-delivering 25,000 Belgian francs — worth $116,000 today — to his war-weary workers, who hadn't been paid in months.
