The 489-bed District General Hospital provides services to around 258,000 people in the local area.
Pilkington Eclipse Advantage™ greatly helps to reduce temperature extremes in buildings. The refurbishment required the installation of over 3,000 IGUs and were a combination of 4mm Pilkington Eclipse Advantage™ Grey with 6.4mm Pilkington Optilam K Glass™ and 4mm Eclipse Advantage™ Clear with 6.4 Pilkington Optilam K Glass™. The result was a visually pleasing, energy-efficient glass façade, which has helped contribute to a better environment within the hospital.
The biggest challenge to the project was the requirement to keep the hospital open throughout; requiring the refurbishment to be done with a minimum amount of disruption to the staff and patients. A local glazing company was therefore chosen to install the glass; and to contend with a lack of onsite storage, Pilkington organised multiple deliveries each week.
Rachael Holden, Communications Assistant, said: “We are delighted that the project has helped to improve the energy efficiency of the hospital. Not only does it mean we can provide the best environment for our patients, it also contributes towards reducing the building’s energy bills.”
Pilkington Eclipse Advantage™ is one of the many products in the Pilkington solar control range. These products are designed to provide superior energy efficiency control, particularly for those buildings that suffer from high temperatures, for example those that are south-facing. The glass is also available in a range of colours, ensuring that a striking façade can be created that is that both aesthetically pleasing and energy-efficient.
