Owens-Brockway Glass Container Inc. has been fined $48,000 and ordered to pay an additional $50,000 in restitution because it didn't get prior approval to tear down two smokestacks at its 28-acre Oakland plant.
The company -- one of Oakland's largest private employers -- was charged with violating the Clean Air Act by failing to notify the Environmental Protection Agency or the Bay Area Air Quality Management District before demolishing two 130-foot furnace exhaust stacks at its factory, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for Northern California.
The plant is located alongside Interstate 880 at Fruitvale Ave. in 1999.
