GGR’s glazing mini crane helps keep Derby Velodrome project on track

Date: 13 November 2014

A UNIC mini spider crane and robotic glazing arm were hired to lift curtain walling units at the new 1,700 capacity velodrome in Pride Park, Derby.

The £27.5 million development is the fourth of its kind in the UK and will include a 250 metre cycling track, 12 court sports hall, gym, fitness studios and a spinning studio.A UNIC URW-506 spider crane was fitted with a 600kg capacity GL-UMC600 Glass Manipulator to fit glazed curtain walling elements around the curved walls of the velodrome.Working to a 10 metre lifting height, the crane was able to precisely position each of the 200kg angled glass panels around the building’s exterior. The mini crane and glazing attachment combination were able to install all 10 units in just one day.

Construction work has now been completed on the new venue which has been dubbed the key to the future of cycling in the UK. The Derby velodrome is due to be opened to the public in January 2015.

GGR took on a similar job during the construction of the First Direct Arena in Leeds, where a UNIC URW-706 crane and GL-UMC600 attachment were used to install external angled glass panels.

Our mini cranes and glass installation robots have also been used at other velodromes around the UK. Read more about how GGR helped to construct the cycling track at London’s Olympic Velodrome and installed ventilation screens at Manchester’s indoor BMX track.
