EcoClear helps Wakefield Metroglaze win NHIC Award for innovative refurb

The judges were impressed not only by the energy saving aspect of this project but also by the innovation in eliminating the spend and waste associated with complete replacement, whilst still achieving desirable U-values.

The project for RSL Wakefield District Housing at the Lupset estate in Wakefield involves the upgrade of PVC-U casement windows in 1500 Winget properties.

Using EcoClear sealed units from GLASSOLUTIONS Solaglas fitted into the latest generation Sheerframe 7000 PVC-U profile reinforced with Thermlock FP, Wakefield Metroglaze was able to deliver a significant improvement without disrupting the existing outerframe.

The original single glazed sashes installed more than 20 years ago provided poor thermal insulation compared to today’s standards, with a whole window U-value estimated at 4.6 W/m2K – G rated under the WER system. By changing the sash to accommodate an EcoClear double glazed unit featuring Planitherm Total+, Wakefield Metroglaze has transformed the insulation level of the windows to the equivalent of a WER B rating with a 1.4 U-value.

Wakefield Metroglaze fabrication manager Rob Smith said: “The longevity of the Sheerframe windows fitted 20 years ago was such that we quickly identified the upgrade-ability potential of the windows at Lupset in order to meet today’s Building Regulations.

“WDH were keen to minimise disruption to tenants and expenditure so sash replacement presented the ideal solution, providing we could get a superior glass and frame configuration to work effectively to deliver the required leap in insulation levels. EcoClear sealed units from GLASSOLUTIONS Solaglas enabled us to do exactly this.”

Wakefield Metroglaze is completing the replacements at a rate of 25 properties per week and 1500 households have benefited.

Cllr Maureen Cummings Cabinet Member for Communities said: “This project delivered big improvements with very little disruption and mess for tenants and at a far lower cost than a full window replacement.
