DELO wins German Industry’s Innovation award

Date: 18 March 2014

DELO® Industrial Adhesives won the German Industry’s Innovation Award in the category “SMEs”. The company was honored for its research activities to reduce reflections on displays with the help of transparent adhesives.

Displays are gaining ground in many industries from consumer electronics to cars to industrial systems. However their readability under sunlight is a well-known issue. The main reason for this problem is the air gap between display and glass cover that refracts the sunlight. DELO®’s adhesives fill this gap and thus reduce the reflections by two thirds. This saves energy consumed by the backlight of the display.

In addition, adhesives significantly increase the display’s stability. In a special test, the glass cover remained intact and did not splinter even after the impact of a steel ball with a weight of 13.22 lb (6 kilograms) from a height of 98.425 in (2.5 meters). Another reason for awarding DELO® is that the innovation has already proven itself in practice. Display manufacturers can produce high volumes within short periods of time.

“This award is a great honor for our entire team and confirms all of our research efforts. At the same time, it demonstrates the important role our high-tech adhesives play in modern products”, says Dr. Wolf-Dietrich Herold, Managing Partner at DELO®. “Innovation means future. It is the key to our success. Therefore, we intend to invest even more than 15 percent of our sales revenues in future research and development.”

The German Industry’s Innovation Award is considered to be the first innovation award worldwide and was presented for the 33rd time on March 15. It is is organized by the F.A.Z. Institute in the categories major enterprises, SMEs, start-ups and innovative human resources concepts. The award is under the patronage of the Ministries of Research and Economy and is presented to significant scientific, technical, entrepreneurial and intellectual innovations of the German economy.
