The youngsters as well as their teachers and school administrators were taught about the "shelter in place" concept, which urges individuals to go inside immediately, shut off heaters and air conditioners, close and seal off windows and doors, and take other steps if a chemical emergency occurs.
The program - which DuPont designed in cooperation with local emergency management officials - also teaches children that chemicals can be used safely and about the importance of creating a personal safety plan.
So far, roughly 3,000 school children in the Corpus Christi area have been taught about "shelter in place" procedures through the DuPont program. Commitment to safety, health and the environment is a DuPont core value.
